Instead of giving a presentation, have a conversation with the panel.

The ideal way to assess a speaker’s skills, is to observe them in a variety of situations. For example, you sound conversational, more animated when talking to your kids. As a coach, my job is to help you use that style in formal situations, and still be yourself. So let’s look at ways you can be more conversational.

1. When it’s your turn to speak, deliver a concise, creative opening instead of jumping into the first slide. Tell them what you’ve done to get your arms around their project or expand on your role or explain why their project is personal to you.

2. Script short cameos which allow you to expand on another speaker’s point. Think of them as “tweets.” If you’re the PM, use those tweets to tie key points back to the client’s project.

3. Present with another speaker so that you go back and forth on each slide. It takes more rehearsal but gets you more points.
