Where do I put my hands?

How you move, when you move, when you smile and when you don’t is as important as what you say. The goal for each speaker is to be relaxed, confident and in control. I sat down with my colleagues to uncover their best body language tips.

1. Sit like a broadcaster and increase your real estate. Make yourself tall by pushing your shoulders up and back. Place uncrossed hands on the table, shoulder width apart. By occupying more space, you appear more in control.

2. Stand and deliver. Straighten your back, move your arms out and gesture to grab the panel’s attention. Move around as you speak and use eye contact to make it personal. In between gestures, let your arms just relax by your side.

3. Find your voice. A well-modulated voice makes your ideas stand out. Let the pitch move up and down. Make it softer or louder for emphasis. Everyone likes a good storyteller.

4. Add the victory gesture. Before your team goes into the interview room, pump them up. Stand in a circle, raise both arms straight up with fists closed and chant, “ready to win.”
